On March 18–22, 2024, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the International Conference «The Fourth V.G. Rastyannikov’s Readings»: Asian and African Countries on the Path to a Multipolar World. The International Conference was organized by the Center for Agrarian Research and Food Security, Department of Economic Research at the IOS RAS.

The Conference featured the participation of over 120 Russian and international experts, with 115 reports delivered. The program included a plenary session and seven thematic sessions.

The Conference was held in a hybrid format (in-person and online), and the presentations were delivered in Russian or English.

The conference brought together researchers from academic and educational centers in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Vladivostok, Sevastopol, Tomsk, and Tyumen, as well as colleagues from Kazakhstan, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, India, Indonesia, and other countries. The following institutions were represented: the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Institute of Economics of the RAS, the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the RAS, the Institute for African Studies of the RAS, MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Kalmyk Scientific Center of the RAS, the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Russian State University for the Humanities, the Institute of Demographic Research of the Federal Research Sociological Center of the RAS, Far Eastern Federal University, Kazan Federal University, Tomsk State University, Voronezh State University, Buryat State Pedagogical University, National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow & Saint Petersburg), Saint Petersburg State University, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the All-Russian Academy of Foreign Trade, Shanghai International Studies University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Raja Madhusudan Dev Degree College of Science and Education, and others.

The opening ceremony and plenary session of the conference focused on the issues of a new world order, defined by the transition of Asian and African countries toward multipolarity. In their speeches, A.K. Alikberov and V.A. Meliantsev outlined the necessity for this new order and the conditions under which Asian and African nations are making this transition. Their assessments set the tone for the subsequent discussion.



During the conference sessions, participants’ reports addressed the following issues:

  • The transition to multipolarity and sustainable development in Asian and African countries, and their role in shaping a multipolar world;
  • Crises, catastrophes, catharses, and development in the countries of the East and the Global South;
  • Current problems of socio-economic development in Asia and Africa, and the impact of globalization and fragmentation;
  • Scientific and technological cooperation as a factor in shaping a multipolar world and prospects for expanding Russia’s cooperation with Asian and African countries;
  • Food security as the foundation for a multipolar world;
  • The role of information and communication technologies at the new stage of development.

Session of young scientists was organized as part of the conference, featuring presentations from over 20 master’s and bachelor’s degree students, all of which were delivered at a high academic level. The session demonstrated the significant potential for advancing research on acute socio-economic problems in Asian and African countries within educational centers both in Russia and abroad.

In summarizing the outcomes of «The Fourth V.G. Rastyannikov’s Readings»: Asian and African Countries on the Path to a Multipolar World, the considerable interest of the scientific community in the problems of transitioning to a multipolar world order can be noted. The conference contributed to a deeper understanding of the diverse approaches to assessing the sustainable development of Asian and African nations on their path toward multipolarity.
